General Troup's headquarters were later moved to Mount Vernon when that city became the capital of the United States. In 1828, Captain George Wythe organized a group of men called the Mount Vernon Volunteers to resist an attempt by Robert Epps to sell government lands near Washington Crossing into private hands; this event helped make Danvilian history as one of America's most active civic organizations during its early years (see also "George Wythe"). In 1861, Confederate forces under General Jubal Early attacked Fort Sumter; within minutes they had over 50 Union troops killed or captured including Peter Cooper (founder/director/president/chief executive officer of Ebenezer Howard University). This event made Danvilian history as one of America's most prominent Confederate cities during its early years (see also "Jubal Early"). From 1865 until 1870, much effort was expended by residents and businesses throughout Northern Virginia to suppress Reconstructionist sentiment following the American Civil War (see also " Reconstruction"); this activity helped make Danvilian history as one ofAmerica's most important northern towns during its early years (see also "Northern Virginia").
