The Culpeper Rifle and Shotgun Museum is located in the city of Culpeper, Virginia. The museum was created in 1984 as a result of a merger between the Culpeper Rifle and Shotgun Club and the Culpeper Historical Society. It contains more than 20,000 items related to firearms, ammunition, and history in Culpeper County. The museum also has a strong collection of historic rifles from across Virginia. Culpeper was once a major center for rifle manufacturing in the region. In 1852, John Stevens began producing rifles at his mill on the Rappahannock River. By 1907, however, all rifle production had stopped due to economic recession in America. Culpeper is a small town in Virginia, located on the James River. The population was 6,554 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Culpeper County and home to one of the 11 original townships in Virginia. The area that now makes up Culpeper was first settled by English colonists in 1607 as part of King George's Colony. The name "Culpeper" derived from "Chepestre", an ancient parish in Normandy where John Culpepper, 1st Baron Fairfax had his seat from 1612-1627. In 1631, Sir William Berkeley granted 202 acres (8 km2) to the inhabitants of Culpeper for their support during the Battle of Worcester. In 1778, during the American Revolution, Captain John Moore fought with General Washington's army at Saratoga and received a promotion to Major General after serving under him throughout that war. After the war ended he returned home and became a landholder and Planter in what is now known as Culpeper County. He served as Supervisor of roads and justice from 1787-1794 before dying at his estate near present day Arlington Hall on October 9th, 1794 aged 80 years old. In 1803 when President Thomas Jefferson took office he appointed James Monroe as Commissioner for Roads and Canals without compensation which led to a long legal battle between private individuals over who should be responsible for maintaining public infrastructure such as roadsides etc., culminating with the erection of two major bridges across the James River; one over Lee Bridge (now called I-95)and another over Yorktown Bridge (now named George Washington Bridge). The issue was finally resolved by Order No. 598 dated November 3rd 1861 which vested all responsibility for maintaining public infrastructure completely within municipality boundaries subject only to occasional review by county commissioners or other appropriate officials elected by residents thereof - this system remains in place today! 1 million people visited Charlottesville alone during March Madness – more than any other city! Many small businesses have closed or been folded into larger businesses but many others continue to operate unchanged because they provide essential services such as janitorial staff or catering services etc., something that has not changed much over time despite repeated economic downturns!.
