Culpeper, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is bordered by Winchester to the north, Harrisonburg to the east, and Patrick Henry to the south. The population was 7,898 as of 2010. The first Europeans to visit what is now Culpeper were traders from Jamestown who landed on the Rappahannock River in 1607. The area that would become Culpeper was part of Berkeley County until 1781 when it became part of Fairfax County. In 1802, George Washington purchased land in present-day Culpeper from a group of farmers for $500. This purchase made Culpeper one of Washington's most important towns and gave it its current name. Culpeper was incorporated as a town on February 20, 1825 and became a city on November 3, 1852. On April 25, 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Culpeper and captured many Union soldiers and civilians including Mayor John Smedley Jr.. After the war ended, Culpeper reverted back to its original status as a town with an mayor until 1954 when it had its own municipal government under Commonwealth law. The current mayor is Tom Buttigieg. This rich history can be found throughout downtown where you will find examples of early American architecture such as Meeting House #1 which was erected in 1793 by Colonel Thomas Johnson while he served as justice of peace for Berkeley County (now known as Liberty Hall). Overhead you can see two large clock faces dating back to 1857 – one showing Vermont time while another shows English time which gives an idea about how different parts of America used to look before unification happened! Next door you'll find Presbyterian Church built in 1830 with four stories which still stands today! Continuing down Center Street are three more impressive buildings: Stroudsburg Academy built between 1840 and 1860 (now home to Messiah College), Jackson Tavern opened around 1800 by Captain James Jackson whose family later founded Pulaski Trustees School (now Joseph Jefferson High School) and last but not least Fenton's Store which opened in 1830 owned by Nathaniel Fenton who also donated land for what is now Ballston Spa University!

Culpeper is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original land for Culpeper was donated by Captain John Smith to the Prince George's County Agricultural Society on October 20th, 1793. The first house in what is now Culpeper was built by Capt. John Smith and his wife Jane on December 2nd, 1793. On July 4th, 1812, Lt. Col. Nathaniel Bacon led an attack against the Creek Indian village of Nootka in present day Loudoun County which resulted in the death of many Creeks and destruction of their villages including that at Nootka In 1814 Maj.-Gen James Jarratt founded Culpeper Academy which became one of America's leading schools for girls and continues to operate until this day as one of Culpeper's premier institutions On May 6th 1861 Union forces under General Robert Ewell invaded Virginia while Lieutenant Colonel Preston Blairman commanded them from Fort Myer outside Washington D.C.. With Confederate troops present across much of Northern Virginia (including CulpePER), General Ewell's objective was to link up with General Lee south of Richmond and cut off Confederate supplies reaching Richmond As events unfolded it quickly became clear that General Ewell's plan would not work as he had no support from within Union ranks and soon withdrew after losing many commanders and men along with most equipment The townspeople were largely uninvolved in this debacle although some did manage to escape before Battle Of Fredericksburg began After the battle most residents moved back into their homes while Arlington County took over management but culpezepers continued to use a small piece of Arlington greenspace known as "the Pits" until 1970 when it reverted back to its historic status as a town
The town of Culpeper, Virginia was founded by the Potomac Company in 1753. The company built a sawmill and gristmill here and developed the town as a manufacturing center. The mill was destroyed by a fire in 1837, but the town continued to grow. In 1865, the United States Congress erected a Capitol building in the town. In 1907, Culpeper became the capital of Virginia.
