The history of Culpeper begins with two families who lived on the land that now makes up the town. The first family to live there was the Watkins family, who were natives of England and arrived in America in 1635. They set up a farm near what is now Main Street in Culpeper. By 1759, they had married another English couple, John and Rebecca Watkins, and moved their family to what is now southern end of Main Street. They named their new home "Culpeper." The Watkinses were not alone when they moved into this property; there were others who followed them soon after. One of these newcomers was Captain George Washington's father-in-law, Thomas Fairfax II., who had come over from England as part of the original Virginia colony team led by General James Clinton. After living for some time at nearby Middlebrook Court (now called Westfield), Fairfax decided that he would like to establish himself permanently in America and bought 640 acres southwest of present-day Culpepir where he built his plantation known as "Fairfax Manor." He gave this tract of land away to various individuals and families over time until it became part of what is today culpezerville Historic District adjacent to US Route 29 on its eastern border just south of Interstate 95 exit 422A/B (I-95/US Route 29 interchange). In 1812, General James Ewell acquired 1/2 mile north east corner extending along present day I-95 corridor from US Route 29 southward to CR 527 eastward from I-95 exit 422A/B (I-95/US Route 29 interchange) becoming Ewell County Courthouse Complex during erection phase thereof In 1881 an addition was made thereto consisting an office building accommodating courtroom etc., three story brick structure with belfry atop towers housing 12 inch metal plaques reproducing original iron grates used by coroners under roof on first floor windows facing courthouse square across road bearing WASHINGTON STATE LOGO & coatofarms

Culpeper is a town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, United States. The population was 18,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Culpeper-Waynesboro-Fredericksburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white European to explore what is now Culpeper County was Captain John Smith in 1607. He named it "New England". In 1757, Colonel James Laforet established a new post here on Roanoke Island and called it "Culpeper" after his friend and mentor General Robert E. Lee who had fought for independence against Great Britain. The original courthouse in town was built in 1802 by Judge Thomas Jefferson and seats today's Courthouse Square Boardwalk Building which houses many local businesses including Applebees BBQ & Pizza, Denny's Restaurant, and several convenience stores as well as Overbrook Elementary School from 1978 until its closure in 2003 due to budget cuts by then Governor Perdue. In 1814 William Byrd IV became the 3rd President of the United States under the Constitution following his election as Vice President on November 3rd (the day before Thanksgiving). On December 12th he delivered his annual message to Congress at this courthouse- now known as The White House Complex- where he outlined an aggressive plan to improve public transportation throughout America while also proposing that Virginians become citizens of the Union soon enough so their rights could be fully recognized! This event helped initiate Richmond's rush towards becoming America's capital city with plans already underway for what would later become downtown Richmond! On January 8th 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early reached Culpeper Station just west of town Limits on orders from General Robert E. Lee this event marking one of history’s turning points along with Petersburg when Confederate General James Longstreet took over control from Confederate Army Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith near Appomattox Court House four days later! After successful battles at Winchester and Goldsboro within weeks Culpeper began to feel siege like conditions existed here unlike anywhere else in Virginia! However even during these dark times there were some bright moments such as when on February 14th 1861 two cannons were fired from Battery Wagner southeast of town limits into Federal lines resulting in one dead or wounded US Soldier being evacuated using a wagon pulled by mules across snowdrifts for five miles back into town limits; or when Department Stores Company president Isaac Whitney donated 1 ton ($10) worthof goods free OF CHARGE directly to poor rural families affected by typhoid fever shuttering numerous stores around Mount Airy between 1886 and 1889!!! 1 million people participated – both native born Virginians living inside Virginia at home while others came through surrounding Maryland/West Virginia areas bringing their skills & technologies but most importantly their appetite for Liberty not Slavery!!!!!! While we may have lost some battles during that time period(Confederate soldiers died Hooker Heights Massacre etc.), overall I believe we accomplished much more than our opponents did during that fateful year...even if they still manage to call themselves “the Confederacy” today!!!!!
