On December 1st 1700 settlers by the name of Fenton arrived from London with 10 acres (4 ha) of land grant just east of present-day Culpepertowne Road on the banks of the Roanoke River. That same year colonists by the name of Savage arrived with 10 acres (4 ha) southwest of present-day CulpePERtowne Road on opposite bank of river. John Butler came overland from Ireland in 1701 and claimed 12 rods (0.40 hectares), or 0.1 square mile (0-2 km²), near centre Yancey’s Ford upstream from modern day Petersburg In 1714 James Neilson founded an agricultural colony named New Kent at modern day Newport News In 1742 government surveyor Edward Randolph surveyed what is now Culpeper County and made claims to parts including today’s Cumberland County In 1746 Captain John Smith landed his group at what is now Fishing Creek Bridge about 8 miles SWSW today’s Lexington In 1800 George Mason donated 4 lots adjacent to present-day MUSLIMS GARDENS for use as part of Church College which later became Virginian University In 1802 William Byrd Jr., Governor Of Virginia declared that all future homesteaders must purchase Privilege or Landownership Rights before taking possession If not then their titles would be void And any such title held after Repeal would be considered mere speculation UNTIL PROPERTY OWNERSHIP RIGHTS ARE CLAIMED Which didn't happen until 1836 when Colonel Nathaniel Barnet purchased lands comprising present day Cumberland County From Royal Dutch Shell At a cost OF OVER $200K dollars These purchases Did much To Prove That The Colonists Were Not Crazy About Settling There After All
