Culpeper, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Culpeper is located in Roanoke County and has a total area of 9 square miles (23 km²). The site where Culpeper now stands was first settled by Native Americans in 17th century; it was then known as "Watauga". The town's current name comes from Captain John Culpeper, who fought for the British against the French during the American Revolution. According to legend, when General Cornwallis arrived at Yorktown and saw that there were no British troops left to oppose him, he ordered his men to burn all evidence of English settlement in what would become Culpeper Hundred. In 1814, Colonel Charles Floyd founded what would become Floyd’s Ferry on present-day Lafayette Street/Route 460 while living near present-day Thoroughfare Gap Road. That same year also saw the founding of Friendship Baptist Church which still serves as one of Culpeper’s most important landmarks today. In 1831, John Waddell purchased 1/3 interest in George Washington National Park and donated it to Virginians in memory of their fallen leader. From this point forward until 1861 when Virgina became an independent state, Culpeper was under full control by Fairfax County government. In 1861 Romeowne & Company began construction on Washington Court House which served as both its headquarters and courtesan quarters for many years until it burned down in 1876; however little remains today except for a small section of drive leading up to it from Main Street which retains some architectural details from its former glory days. In 1865 Captain James Longstreet captured Fort Fisher during Operation Neptune’s Spear; since then Ft Fisher has been an important tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike due to its unique geological features including sandbars dating back more than 4 million years! During World War II much effort went into creating airfields around Richmond so that large numbers of soldiers could be brought home safely after fighting abroad; however only three were ever built: Lewis Field (later renamed Petersburg Municipal Airport), Arlington Airfield (later renamed Williams-Sonoma Airport) and Suffolk County Airfield #5 (now referred to simply as Suffolk County Airport). All three fields are long gone but their memories live on through various businesses remaining at their respective locations such as Pritchett Aviation Museum adjacent to Lewis Field while Arlington Airfield continues functioning as a public airport serving Elizabeth City multiple times each month with Flynt Travel being headquartered there too throughout most summers! As recently as 1990 Norfolk Southern Railroad leased land adjacent to Suffolk County Airport for use as an engine yard; however since then operations have ceased entirely due primarily to environmental concerns about soil erosion caused by traffic volume! Today not only does SuffolkCountyAirport offer excellent aviation opportunities but also makes significant contributions towards economic development within our community thereby helping create nearly 5500 jobs across 3 counties over the past 20 years! Today we continue celebrating our diversity through our Annual “Cultural Faire” held each September – America’s largest free event featuring local artists & organizations performing traditional arts alongside interactive exhibits followed by dinner & dancing!!!!!!
