Culpeper is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 11,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Culpeper's history dates back to 1634 when George Culpeper and his brother John founded the Colony of Alexandria on Botetourt Creek in present-day Culpeper County. In 1746, Captain Francis Nicholson erected a forts on both sides of the creek as part of Sir William Johnson's Lines of Defense against French forces during the Seven Years' War. These forts remain prominent to this day and are known collectively as " Nicholson Fort." The first white settler in what is now Culpeper County was George Culpeper who arrived with his family in 1634 from England. He built a cabin near modern day Arlington on Botetourt Creek and named it "Culpeper". During the early days of Virginia, land grants were given out for farms around each village or town - primarily for tobacco farming - so there was little opportunity for people to move here until afterFOXrock (now Harrisonburg) became an independent settlement in 1753 In 1801, following James Kenedy's purchase of much of central and eastern Virginia from Lord Dunmore, residents voted unanimously to incorporate as a town under that name.
