In Culpeper, Virginia, there have been firearms clothing stores for over a hundred years. The first store was opened in 1846 by W. H. Armstrong and his son-in-law, John Nicholson. The store continued to be operated by Armstrong until it closed in 1893. The next Store to open in Culpeper was the Lewis & Clark Gun Shop which was located at 341 Main Street. This store continued to be run by Lewis & Clark until 1949 when they moved to their current location at 701 Main Street. After 1949, the tradition of firearm clothing stores came to an end in Culpeper as most of the businesses closed or merged into other businesses during the early 1970s timeframe. However, one business that survived until 1974 was The Gadsden Gunsmithing Company which had been located at 601 Main Street since 1912. The Gadsden Gunsmithing Company continued operations until 1986 when it merged with another firearms company, The Armoury Inc., and became known as Armoury Firearms Incorporated (AFI). subsequent to AFI's incorporation there were several mergers and acquisitions throughout the 1990s and 2000s that caused many of Culpeper's firearm retailers to close down or merge into other businesses including Armory Guns Incorporated (AGI) who reopened on January 1st 2002 after being dormant for over 20 years; Lewis & ClarkGunShop who reopened on October 5th 2003 after closing its doors for multiple years due to poor sales; Gadsden Gunsmithing Co which re-opened on September 4th 2006 after being inactive for over 25 years; Sandy Hook Firearms Shop which reopened on November 17th 2006 after being inactive for over 10 years; finally Donnybrook Armory Corporation who reopened on December 6th 2007 after having been dormant for about 5 years prior to its opening。

Since then, Culpeper has had a number of businesses and organizations including two churches (Church of God in Christ and Baptist), an elementary school (Culpeper High School), a post office (1896-present), three restaurants (Pelican Prime BBQ, The Crab Shack & Grill, Indian Head Cafe), two schools - Culpeper Junior/Senior High School (founded 1888) and Culpeper Elementary School (founded 1966), as well as several residences including Oneonta Court House which served as headquarters for both local militia units during World War II;and two Villages - Covington Park and Addison Court House - that were used as summer homes by prominent Virginians such as Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Culpeper is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Culpeper was Nicholas Westfall in 1781. He and his wife, Rebecca Childs, built a cabin on what is now Union Street about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of the present town center. They were the first white people to live in Culpeper Township and it was incorporated as a townsite on February 14, 1853. On November 3, 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell's forces burned down Nicholas Westfall's home and business on Union Street after they drove him out of town following a skirmish near Harpers Ferry Bridge. In 1861 or 1862 Captain John Aiken arrived with his brigade from Fortress Monroe and established himself at Harper's Ferry Station as commander of an artillery detachment under Major General Ambrose Burnside. In December 1863 he evacuated Petersburg before Confederate defenses could be constructed there and reached Culpeper without being engaged by Federal troops. On January 1, 1865 Lieutenant Colonel James Hogue assumed command of all Ulysses S Grant's artillery brigades west of Richmond amid reports that General Lee had retreated to safety at Appomattox Court House following his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th. Hogue personally led his brigade into action around 7 p.m., opening fire upon Confederate batteries positioned along Harrisonburg Road southeast of town while other units pounded away from position northwest of town until dark; this engagement resulted in one killed and four wounded (the only non-fatal engagement during the entire war). Aiken returned to duty with reinforcements at Harper's Ferry Station after leaving Culpeper for good on May 15th; he reorganized artillery detachments throughout Virginia until September when he left for Chattanooga to take part in Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign; Aiken was lieutenant colonel commanding 1st Brigade 2nd Division Cavalry Corps area east of Rome Newsome Mississippi when he died suddenly early October 11th near Gadsden Alabama while leading horseback charges against Confederate trenches
