For the first time, women were given voting rights and able to hold property themselves; African Americans began working alongside whites; Native Americans were removed from their traditional roles and assimilated into European culture; and technological advances brought about new ways for settlers to produce food and trade goods with other parts of North America. As these changes took place, so too did colonial life at Colonial Heights. evidenced by architecture such as the Dutch Reformed Church or Stirling's Tavern – both built during this time period – which retains many features characteristic of early eighteenth century British colonies throughout North America. In fact, despite being located some 90 miles away from any major city or town within America, Colonial Heights continued to maintain its own unique character even after becoming part of what is now Richmond County seat in 1784. This was due largely to two factors: First, because it was hamlet status until1784 – meaning that no one bore ultimate responsibility for infrastructure or governance – local officials remained more likely inclined towards fiduciary responsibility towards their constituents rather than taking advantage of unlimited commercial opportunity which threatened their autonomy; second, because there was little reason for outsiders to come here other than if they felt an interest in exploring virginia through its natural resources or experiencing its history firsthand (a practice which quickly died out after 1800).
