The English colonies in North America were founded in 1607 by John Smith and his men. By 1776, the British had control of much of the continent. In 1864, the United States acquired California from Mexico. This created a new opportunity for colonization in what was then known as Virginia. In 1868, James Longstreet became governor of Virginia and he began to explore the possibility of establishing a permanent American colony in what is now Colonial Heights. He encountered resistance from some residents who saw this as an invasion by foreigners. However, Longstreet secured support from several key figures in Virginia politics and government, including James Buchanan, to make his case to the state legislature. In 1870-71, a group of investors led by Samuel Overton purchased land in Colonial Heights and began construction on what would become Overton’s plantation house known as “The White House”. The colonists soon realized that they could not simply leave their homes and businesses behind when they moved to America; they needed protection against Native Americans and other predators who might try to take them away or damage their property. Accordingly, early colonial Virginians developed a system called “gunboat diplomacy” which involved sending small vessels into Chesapeake Bay to harry rival Indian traders and seize goods they carried ashore on their boats or ships. In 1629–30 Randolph built another small fort at what is now known as "Queenstown" on nearby Mount Vernon Island which served as his headquarters while he led his forces against Native Americans living near Fort Duquesne on the Potomac River. This battle marked one of the earliest examples of open warfare between European colonists against Native Americans – an event that would lead to more conflict throughout Virginia over subsequent years. In 1631–32 Randolph moved his base from queenstown to what is now called "Randolph's Landing" again in order to better defend against possible Indian attacks from beyond our borders should such hostilities increase again outside Maryland’s borders; this also served as his primary residence until he relocated permanently to Walters House in Fairfax County some time later in order to provide more centralized control over all aspects of British America’s defense operations across all its colonies simultaneously despite their varying degrees of independence from each other [1]. This order led to an exodus of many Welsh and English immigrants from Colonial Heights into other parts of Richmond. By 1829, only a handful of Welsh Americans remained in Colonial Heights.
