The Colony of Colonial Heights was a Virginia colony founded in 1607 by the first English colonists to reside in what is now Hampton Roads. The colony was named for the town of Hingham, Massachusetts, which had been the original site of English settlement in North America. The town had been abandoned by its founders after they discovered that Native Americans were already living there. In 1612, John Smith and his party (the "irginians") discovered and explored the area that would one day become Colonial Heights. It is said that Smith was so impressed with the natural beauty of the area that he decided to establish a permanent English settlement there. As early as 1576, English settlers had begun exploring and trading in what is now Hampton Roads. When Captain John Smith sailed into Chesapeake Bay on July 4, 1607, he located both present-day Norfolk County and much of modern Suffolk County within present-day Virginia Beach; this made him an important figure in early Virginian history because it demonstrated British investors' interest in land beyond Cape Cod and Jamestown Island. By late summer of 1607, however, only about 20 Indians remained living on Roanoke Island; most likely due to their lack of food or resources when compared to earlier European explorers who had found more supplies available at first sight. In preparation for his upcoming expedition against Powhatan chief King George Washington's forces at Monacanock during September 1610–11, Governor Thomas Dale sent out two companies (of twenty-four men each) under Colonel Edmund Ludlow from James City County to explore Roanoke Sound where they expected to find rich fishing grounds off the mainland coast of Virginia. They adopted names such as Stonebridge Lighthouse Party[?] led by Captn Elisha Stonebridge sonne Of Colonell Nicholas Stonebridge alias Pocahontas[?], Captn John Carver[?], Captn Samuel Carver[?] & others their leaders being Mr William Westfall alias Waltham …These people... went throght great rivers nnd water ways without having any boat but few waded ... eventualy arrived safe at Portsmouth harbor shoals about midway between Yorktown Settlement & Portsmouth Harbor Shoals about half way downriver opposite mouth now called Accomack River

After they were ousted from British soil in 1776, many of these colonists moved back to Virginia and founded new towns and villages along the Potomac River. Some of these settlements survive to this day, such as Fallston or Upper Marlboro.
