In 1814–15 alone, Richmond saw more than 100 shiploads of goods pass through Colonial Heights waters unloading at anchor on both banks of the Rappahannock River

The area around present-day Colonial Heights became an important commercial center during this time period because of its strategic location on two major waterways: the Potomac River and James River. By 1800, Colonials had built over 100 homes in what is now Colonial Heights; this number has only grown since then due to growth in surrounding areas such as Reston and Sterlingburg

In 1828, Nathan Bedford Forrest moved from Tennessee into what is now Colonial Heights and began developing land around his ranchhouse. He named his new community "Forrest" after himself and declared it a proprietary colony under his control. In 1830, Forrest became majority owner of Fauquier Parish in Fairfax County; this made him one of Virginias most powerful landowners. During the American Civil War, many residents fled or were forced out of their homes in colonial Heights due to fears for their safety. Some left behind belongings or families who lived there until recently enjoying its history unchanged
