Colonial Heights is a small town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was founded in 1747 as part of the Colony of Virginia by James Madison and his wife, Catherine Fairfax. The town became anofficial incorporated village on January 1, 1871. The population of Colonial Heights was 2,815 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Colonial Heights was first inhabited by the Powhatan people. They were forced from their homes in 1607 by the English under the Plantation System. After years of captivity, they converted to Christianity and abandoned their ancient way of life. In 1747, Captain John Smith discovered what he thought was a large colony of Pocahontas Indians living near Jamestown on York River. He named this area "Colonial Heights" in honor of his discovery and took possession of the land for himself and his men. Over time, other groups moved into this area including Germans, Swedes, Irishmen and blacks who had been brought over as slaves or indentured servants during the British period of slavery. Many local businesses were started due to the influx of new residents: such as a millinery store that still exists today called "Mrs." Goudreau's Mill", where women would buy hats and gloves from local merchants; a blacksmith shop; a grocery store; several churches (including one which still stands); and a schoolhouse which served grades K-12 until 1963 when it burned down). During World War II many soldiers were stationed in or around colonial heights due to its strategic location near German forces besieging Norfolk Naval Base at Elizabeth City Peninsula. This area came to be known as "The Hill".
