The Colony of Virginia was founded in 1753 by the wealthy Tidewater investors James and Mary Randolph. He named it Blairland after himself and his father-in-law, William Johnston. Blairland quickly became a prosperous landowner with numerous slaves and free people living on his property. In addition to being a major player in early Virginia society, he also funded important social programs such as education and roads. In 1801 he died at age 87 years old and is buried at least partially in front of his home in Colonial Heights today. Today Colonial Heights remains an important community with its own businesses, schools, churches (especially Episcopal), hospitals (including one founded by Drs. Benjamin Franklin & Thomas Jefferson), residences for government officials and other residents alike; however much has changed since then including changes within Virginia itself which have had an impact on both the community's character as well as its demographics
