The Colony of Virginia was founded in 1607 by English colonists. The area now known as Colonial Heights was first settled by the Powhatan Indian people, who were displaced by English settlers in the late 1600s. The Powhatan Indians were responsible for many of the land grants that were made to English settlers in what is today Colonial Heights. In 1775, during the American Revolution, Patriot forces fought a battle at Monmouth Court House against British troops led by General George Washington. After the victory at Monmouth Court House, Patriots began to take over much of England and America. Colonial Heights became part of Virginia after the Revolution. In 1814, when Congress passed an act recognizing Virginians as citizens, they gave their town its charter. The town developed rapidly due to its location on a major trade route between London and Richmond (now Richmond). By 1830, Colonial Heights had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1834, local residents voted to secede from Virginia and become a separate state called West Virginia. As part of West Virginia’s effort to gain admission into the Union as a nation, Colonial Heights joined WestVirginia soon after. The town continued to grow throughout its years as a result of its close relationship with both WestVirginia and Virginia; it has since grown beyond what was once available within its boundaries. Although there have been some changes over time – most notably through development along Interstate 95 – Colonial Heights remains one of Virginias most vibrant communities today
The development of Colonial Heights began in the late 17th century when English settlers arrived in what is now Colonial Heights, Virginia. The area was originally part of Prince George’s County and was known as Upper Marlboro Township. In 1681, a group of English settlers by the name of Smith family purchased land in what is now Colonial Heights from the local Indian tribe. The original colonists were farmers who grew corn and potatoes. By 1710, the population of Upper Marlboro Township had increased to around 100 people and by 1720, it had grown to over 150 people. On July 12, 1724, a smallpox epidemic hit Prince George’s County and killed many people; this event is commonly known as the Great Pox Epidemic. As a result of this pandemic, many English colonists left their homes for economic reasons. Meanwhile, some Virginians continued to live in Upper Marlboro Township and started businesses such as tanneries and breweries. In 1753-1754, Major General Thomas Gage led an army against the Powhatan Confederacy during King George II’s War (the French & Indian War). As a result of this war, much land was transferred from Native American ownership to British hands including Lower Marlboro Township which became part of Fairfax County in 1802.
