The Colony of Virginia was founded in 1607 by Englishmen looking for a new land to settle. The original settlers were mostly Scots-Irish, but later waves of English and Welsh immigrants also came to the colony. In 1643, the English granted George Berkeley, an Anglican bishop, permission to establish a religious community in what is now Colonial Heights. The community quickly grew and two years later it had a population of over 300 people. The colony's first governor, Thomas Dudley, made sure that the colonists received good food and clothing and that they had access to education and trade opportunities. He also encouraged farming and industry so that the colony could provide goods for its own citizens as well as sell products back to England. The colonists built churches, schools, mills, warehouses and other infrastructure in order to better support themselves. They also developed their own law system and currency. Despite these efforts, the colony struggled during its early years due to economic problems such as poor soil conditions, lack of resources (mainly natural gas) and competition from other colonies in North America. However, thanks to various initiatives by Dudley such as giving free land tenure to farmers who worked out their payments in kind or creating more commercial opportunities for the colonists, Colonial Heights eventually became successful. By 1733 there were over 2200 people living in what is now Colonial Heights proper. During the American Revolution (1775-1783), many Virginians opposed British rule because they believed that their rights as Americans should be respected rather than based on whether or not they agreed with British policies. As a result of this opposition some aspects of colonial life were changed including freedom of religion being extended to all residents which helped drive up tensions between Brits and Colonials (and Native Americans). In 1781 Richmond was captured by General Lee after a bloody battle that saw over 50% of Virginia's men killed or wounded; this event symbolized Yorktown's defeat at Saratoga Army Campaign (1777-1778) subsequent loss of New York City key port etc.). Aftermath saw increased violence throughout UpperVA & much political upheaval culminating with fiery speech given by Edmund Randolph calling for "Emancipation" from British rule...enduring into present day
