In 1776, the Virginia Colony was founded on the eastern shore of the James River. The colony was named after King George III of England and it flourished for many years due to its fertile soil, strategic location and well-manned militias. However, in 1781, British forces invaded Virginia and began a three-year occupation. In response to this invasion, colonists voted to become an independent republic known as the United States of America. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), airguns were used extensively by colonial militiamen. By 1778, there were over 1,000 firearms in use in Virginia alone. These cannons required a large amount of ammunition which caused great inconvenience for Virginians living near cannon batteries; however these cannons still posed a major threat to American settlements downstream on the James River ( southern Richmond included). To meet these needs, gunners employed various methods including balloon bombing (fireing missiles filled with lead or other materials that explodes upon impact), ground mortar shelling (throwing stones or other objects at fortifications), or incendiary bombs (dropping incendiaries into open areas). Unfortunately for American troops occupying southern Richmond during these years – all three methods resulted in heavy losses both human lives and equipment damage – so alternative means had to be found if artillery battery commanders needed fresh supply of munitions while encircling their opponents’ fortified positions night and day!

One such example is Tuskegee Airmen Flying Training School instructor Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin who attended Colonial Heights High School before becoming an American astronaut in 1969 who traveled to space twice with NASA; he also lost his left leg belowthe knee in a hovercraft accident while training for that mission). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction (1865-1912), many African Americans were reemployed within white-owned businesses rather than lose their jobs due to racist discrimination policies targeting them across America - this process known as "Emancipation." The area that is now Colonial Heights was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. The town began to grow around a mill that was built on the riverbank near present-day One Hundred and Eighteenth Street. By 1775, the mill had become a large and important business center in the colony. In 1814, the British burned down the mill and all of the town's buildings, including some of its original settlements. While most of Colonial Heights has since been destroyed, parts of it have been reconstructed as part of various tourism attractions, such as Olde Towne Shopping Center and King George's Court.
