Christiansburg was founded in 1777 by German immigrants and has been a center for religious services, education, commerce and industry throughout its history. The town of Christiansburg was founded on December 12th, 1777 by men from Hamburg, Germany under the leadership of Johann Friedrich Ziegler. At that time there were only about thirty people living in what is now Christiansburg. The town had two primary purposes: to serve as a stop on the road between Harrisonburg and Petersburg, and to act as a place where German settlers could worship God according to their own religious beliefs. There were no schools or churches until after America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776. As the town grew more populated, it began to build roads, bridges and other infrastructure necessary for hosting larger events such as parades or fairs. In 1804-1805 local citizens raised money through an auction to purchase land east of town which would become the site of today’s downtown area. This purchase allowed for permanent settlement within what is now Christianityburg limits; however much development occurred outside those boundaries until after World War II when churches were built all around downtown core with limited access available to outsiders (outside businesses). The first Baptist church was organized in CHRISTIANSBURG on November 15th 1813 by Captain John Rankin who resided near present day Main Street corner with Petticoat Lane (now US 1) After Revolutions of 1848 many Germans left Virginia due to political unrest caused by new voting laws designed primarily against Catholics – many seeking refuge along with their families into neighboring Maryland where they purchased land near Washington D C . On January 6th 1850 George Washington Carver arrived at Christianburg on horseback after spending several weeks traveling upriver from Alexandria via Rockbridge County searching for refugees fleeing rioting in St Louis Missouri . The area that includes Christiansburg was part of the Powhatan Confederacy and it was during this time that they began to explore and claim land in present-day Virginia. A group of American Revolutionaries, led by George Washington, crossed the Potomac River into Maryland in 1775 and then marched through Virginia to take over government from British forces. In 1819, Christianityburg became a town in Prince Edward County when it amalgamated with other towns in the county. It grew quickly due to its location and its access to timber, water resources, railroads, and agricultural potential. In 1916, Christiansburg was designated as the capital of Prince Edward County after being selected as one of fourteen sites for an new county courthouse. The first building was designed by architect James Wirtz and built at a cost of $2 million. The construction project was completed within two years and opened on October 1, 1916.
