Today, Christiansburg is a small town located within Fairfax County on the banks of the Shenandoah River. The town has a population of about 9200 people and is home to many commercial businesses as well as several churches and schools. It also retains a significant role in Virginia history due to its status as one of the few towns that served as capital during bothpresident George Washington's first term (1789-1793) and James Ketchum's second term (1801-1809). The British conquest of North America meant that christiansburgh lost its importance but it remained an important trading post until American independence forced Britain to abandon it in 1783** *.
