The history of firearms in Christiansburg, VA begins with the early 1800s when the first muskets were introduced to this area. The town was founded in 1738 by Captain James Ferguson and his family. By 1819, ownership of the land had passed from Ferguson to Thomas Jefferson. In 1871, Christianityburg became a city and began acquiring properties and businesses along its downtown streets. By 1906, Christianburg had over 100 businesses including 19 gunsmith shops and two arsenals. In 1934, the Virginia legislature passed legislation that made it illegal to sell any type of firearm except for hunting rifles or shotguns within one mile of any public school. This prohibition still applies today. Firearms manufacturing ceased in Christiansburg in 1938 but continued operations at two arsenals until 1945 when all production was halted due to World War II. In 1938, Christiansburg’s two arsenals produced just over 1 million pieces of firearms (guns and ammunition) which amounted to about 20% of all firearms manufactured in Virginia at that time. In 1946-48, these arsenals underwent a modernization program which increased their capacity from 585 guns per day to 2 million pieces per day! This growth has come about due primarily to suburbanization which has led more people living near large universities or major industrial centers than making their homes inside historic neighborhoods around churches or other historic sites.
