The Christianburg community of Christiansburg, Virginia is a small town located in west central Virginia. The population was 7,063 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Christiansburg were Native Americans who called the area "Cheyennes." When he was released in 1781 after negotiations with British negotiators led by George Washington, Hogg came to Christianityburg where he met Nathanael Greene and others involved in developing Virginian society. He soon became one of its most influential citizens. Nathanial Greene's father also arrived in this area around 1750 when he married Susanna Seddon from Accomack County near Portsmouth Naval Air Station (now Hampton Roads). After his father's death in 1802, Nathanial Greene moved his family here and started a tobacco plantation that later became one of the largest tobacco plantations in America. One reason for this growth was because of religious affiliation: Nathanial Greene had joined Anglican Church as a boy growing up on his family's estate near Portsmouth Naval Air Station; however, after becoming president of West Point under James Ketchum (the son-in-law of Nathanial Greene), he converted to Quakerism before his death in 1828. Christiansburg grew rapidly during Reconstruction following reconstruction through 1865 until it experienced a period of decline starting around 1876 when white southerners regained their power over southern Virginia due to widespread violence throughout much of America caused by racism following Reconstruction – often referred to as "the Jim Crow era." With few jobs available outside rural areas due to land restrictions placed upon black Americans during Reconstruction by Confederate states like South Carolina and Alabama – many young men turned increasingly towards crime as opportunities dwindled elsewhere – Christianityburg faced difficult times until it recovered somewhat beginning around 1900 with increased attention paid to infrastructure projects such as creating new schools and hospitals within town limits along with improvements made to roadsides for safety purposes . However efforts were eventually discontinued due largely to budgetary constraints following World War II . Finally reaching its present size about 1990 according as most residents moved away or left for better economic opportunities outside town limits – although there are occasional visits from retired military members or their families who continue living hereabouts . Churches have continued playing an important role within this community since its beginnings with Episcopal churches being dominant until recently while Baptist churches are currently leading the charge .
