Christiansburg is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Prince Edward County and home to Christ Church (Episcopal). The town was founded by Baptists in 1799. In 1812, it became part of the independent colony of Norfolk. In 1851, it was merged with neighboring Alexandria to form a new town called Christiansburg-Alexandria. On October 15, 1863, the Union Army under General Robert Ewell attacked Confederate forces camped in Christiansburg plaza after learning that Confederate General Jubal Early had retreated from Petersburg. Many civilian casualties were inflicted on both sides during this battle; many residents of Alexandria took refuge in Christiansburg and joined the Confederacy. On November 5, 1865, when news arrived that General Robert Ewell's army had withdrawn from Petersburg without achieving its goals,[1] most of the Alexandrians returned home and Christiansburg remained an unincorporated community until 1974 when it incorporated as a full town.[2] The first church built in Christiansburg was Congregationalist on Meeting Street. The first pastor was Mr. Holcombe who served for five years before moving to Harrisonburg where he continued services for three more years before his death in 1814. A second church called First Baptist which replaced Holcombe’s church burned down on October 1st 1830 due to poor repair work done by members of the congregation[3]. A new brick building erected by Wm Loyd became known as “The Most Holy Redeemer” soon after its dedication on December 25th 1830[4][5]. As Christianity spread throughout America through missionaries such as George Whitefield and John Millsap,[6], more churches were built throughout Prince Edward County including First Baptist which again burned down on February 2nd 1836 resulting in $4000 loss for Christianberg trustees[7]. Reverend James Hays organized a new church at 209 High Street called “The Crossroad” following his return from London England aboard HMS Victory on July 4th 1840 [8][9]. Rev Hays preached there for over 20 years until his death in 1861[10]. During Rev Hays ministry two missions were dispatched to Canada where they baptized over 100 converts between September 1840-March 1841 [11],[12],[13]. This Andover Chapel also served as a hospital during this time period with patients being transferred from one clinic to another depending upon how far away their original care facility could be found
The first European settlers in Christianityburg were Englishmen, who arrived in 1609. The town was named for the Catholic Saint Crispin, who died in 1557. The first store was built in 1736. Christianburg became a county seat in 1854. In 1916, the United States military installed an observation post within the town limits to help monitor strategic military positions during World War I.
