Englishman William Tryon landed at Christianburg on October 8, 1775 while exploring the Shenandoah River valley between hitting present-day Frederick, MD and Winchester VA (later called Wheeling). Tryon named his new settlement "Fayette" after General James K. Polk who had helped lead American forces during the Mexican–American War two years earlier. In 1814 British Army Major Robert Ewing built a Fort Ewing which became one of America's most important military installations during the Mexican-American War due to its strategic location along Utopia Road just outside of town limits onthe border between Mexico and Texas In 1847 when Virginians voted in favor of secession from the United States, they chose Prince George's County as their new state capital The first courthouse was built on Main Street near today’s library in 1849 In 1870 an express train ran through town providing passengers with easy access to Baltimore or Washington D C By 1900 there were over 1,000 businesses operating in town with an estimated population of 10,000 In 1916 local resident Mary Ladd donated her land north of main street for use as Arlington National Cemetery which continues to this dayserving as one of America’s largest cemetery systems
