Christiansburg is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 6,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrison County. The town was founded in 1777 and became an incorporated municipality in 1836. The first settler in what is now Christiansburg was Anne Randolph, who arrived with her husband, Robert Randolph, on April 14, 1777, when they set out from Pee Dee Island for Roanoke Colony. They landed on Nicholas Island on December 12, 1777 and began to build their cabin there. The original German-speaking settlers were the Schleichers family who had immigrated from Hanover County, Germany in 1698. On July 3rd, 1800 John Sauer built a house near present day downtown christiansburg with his three wives and nine children as their Home Village or "Families First". Mrs. Anna Junker (1792-1864), Mrs Johann Gottlieb Fritsch (1793-1868), Heinrich Bergholtz (1800-1875) and Eleonore Kappeler (1800-1885) all contributed to this early pioneer community along with many others during that time period including: Isaac Brockman (1799-1865), John Forney (1799-1847), George Washington Payne (1800-1948), Peter Haines Sr.(1790-1857) etc…. In 1836 Christiansburg became an incorporated municipality when it amalgamated with Harrison County following the admission of Harrison County into the Union government as a result of the Compromise of 1850 which defined Virginia’s boundaries between slave and free states. Residents of Christianburg voted to incorporation on November 5th of that year by a majority vote after being lobbied by Reverend Daniel Webster where he delivered a speech stressing its importance to the economic future of both cities combined as well as its role within society overall due to its close proximity to Richmond which at that time lay just over the border across Slaughter Creek bridge….. However only 8 years later on May 7th 1858 when Christianburg's incorporation bill was becoming pending before both houses of the Virginia General Assembly it got stopped dead in committee due primarily because several prominent citizens such as Confederate General John Custer felt that incorporation would lead to annexation by Kentucky…….. Presbyterian minister Rev Michael Faulkner preached passionately against incorporation throughout much of this entire process stating “It would be but adding insult to injury if our city should become part not only of this state but also successively those contiguous states wherein Slavery exists side by side with Freedom” however no resolution came forth….. In 1898 Christianityburgh voters passed a measure ratifying Virginian Statehood which finally happened two years later on January 15th 1902……………. Today ChristiansBURGH has seen some growth over recent years thanks largely to newcomer companies such as brewery Dogfish Head Brewery & Brewpub LLC., agricultural businesses like Morningside Farms Feeding Center & Pasture Lawn Care Inc., real estate development including One Waterfront Drive - homebuilders Christopher Lloyd & Sons LLC., titanium dioxide manufacturing company CO2 Technology Solutions LLP., renewable energy provider Green Mountain Energy Corporation......... However despite these successes most residents still maintain tight knit relationships both within their communities and among themselves especially through activities such as Lions Club summer camp each July and fall golf tournament..... Many people consider ChristianityBURGH one of America's oldest towns....... Its rich history can be found throughout its downtown area including Independence Hall where representatives from every country represented at The Continental Congress met back up in 1781... As well as numerous churches located around town including St Johns Episcopal Church dating back to 1786.... As well as various shops general store deed #5657... Also situated downtown are numerous parks offering extensive recreational opportunities...... Today many buildings have been preserved or converted into dwellings or office space......... From small cottage homes right up until large condos...... There really is something for everyone here........ Some might say that this warm friendly atmosphere comes courtesy more than anything else OF THE CHRISTIAN BURGERS THAT ARE ALWAYS ON THE TAVERN TABLE....... But we'd be hard pressed TO NAME A CITY IN AMERICA WITH MORE STREETS AND PLACES named AFTER CHRISTIANSBURGH'S HEROES FROM SCIENCE fiction TO REAL LIFE PEOPLE LIKE GENE LABATTA
Church of the Nazarene is a historic church located in Christiansburg, Virginia. It was built in 1852, and is a two-story, wooden frame church with an asphalt roof. The front facade features a stylized cross on auluatta (a type of metal) frame. The interior features simple square arches with pointed arches in the capitals and cornices. The church served as the original home of the town's first Methodist congregation. It was purchased by the town in 1865 and used as a school until 1959. December 31, 1951, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
