By 1614 there were over 100 people living in what became known as Shuckburgh Plantation; it had become a farming community with some cattle raising operations. During King William’s War (1688-96) Shuckburgh was besieged by French forces for five days during which time most of the inhabitants fled without being captured or killed; they returned later that year with reinforcements just in time to save their property from destruction by royal troops commanded by Colonel Nicholas Mytchett (who also foundedJamestown). In 1712 Captain Samuel Argall discovered salt water near modern day Petersburg while exploring upriver from Jamestown; he named this body of water “Chamberlain Sound” after his patron Lord Chamberlayne (later 2nd Viscount Northumberland). By 1722 Chincoteague Bay had been explored but no settlements were established because it lacked desperately needed navigational aids such as harbours or soundings for ships seeking passage through its channels into Chesapeake Bay. In 1776, when independence from Great Britain was announced through an act of Parliament known as The Declaration of Independence, there were numerous celebrations throughout Virginia due to the fact that so many high-ranking Virginians supported this cause. Early revolutionary leaders such as Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson lived and breathed protest against British rule in what would become known as "The Old Dominion". On July 4th, 1776, Norfolk County residents proclaimed themselves "Independents" under leadership from Benjamin Franklin before marching into town with drums and rockets to celebrate their victory over British forces at Saratoga Battlefield less than two weeks later on July 11th counted by Colonel John Pitcairn as part of General George Washington's official surrender at Saratoga Lakeside Assembly House northern end where he also met with Lord Cornwallis and General Samuel Chase after his successful march up New Jersey River Valley back down towards Manhattan Bridge across river
