By 1800, there were twelve lighthouses located in Chesapeake Bay with three functioning at once- this number slowly decreased during the 19th century due to shipping delays caused by foggy conditions near Yorktown Heights where Lt.-Gov.-General George Washington lived during most of his life outside of government buildings while he made decisions affecting all Americans through his desk over his dinner table- an event often referred to as 'the dinner party'. The origin story of Mount Vernon has been told many times but one version is that General James Wolfe's forces destroyed two British warships off Point Lookout during their assault on Yorktown Peninsula in 1781 so that they would not be able to challenge American independence or supply British troops fighting against them at Saratoga Field two years later.
