During World War II much of present-day Chesapeake was occupied by Japanese forces during their war against white Allied Forces; most notably Cavite Naval Base which operated out of Elizabeth City Harbor until 1945 when it was transferred to the United States Navy under Operation Coronet (the surrendering Japanese Emperor Hirohito's capitulation). Today much of modern-day Chesapeake is home to large businesses such as Verizon Wireless and Boeing Co., while smaller communities like Discovery Bay Marina offer access to many points along Maryland's Eastern Shore including Catoctin Island National Wildlife Refuge and Princess Anne Island off Jamesport Point on Schooner Landing Road
