After a trip to Europe in 1818 where he toured several ancient cities, Randolph decided that there was no need for another small town on the Eastern Shore with only one store and one school when he found major towns like Baltimore and Washington D.C., with larger populations and more important cultural institutions nearby. In 1840 Chester Amedee Cartledge bought land at Point Breeze along Potomac River for $10 per acre (0.39 ha). This site became known as Cartledge’s Harbor after him because it offered excellent hunting opportunities due to its close proximity to many large rivers including Potomac and Rappahannock rivers as well as Chesapeake Bay

Chesapeake is a city in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area and part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is located in southeastern Virginia on the Elizabeth River. The history of Chesapeake dates back to 10,000 years ago when Paleo-Indians lived hereabouts. In 1619, English colonists established Jamestown on James River opposite modern day Norfolk. After a series of failed attempts to establish a permanent English colony in this strategic location, Captain John Smith founded Jamestown on July 4th, 1619 as an effort to establish English control over what was then called "the most important river in North America." However, within three short years (1624-1626), Smith's settlement had been destroyed by Native Americans who pillaged and burned it; his original objectives for Jamestown were never realized. In 1629, Sir Walter Raleigh established Roanoke Island as an English stronghold along the Atlantic coast between Petersburg and Williamsburg in order to attack Spanish possessions in that area. However after only one year (1630–32), Raleigh's venture turned out to be a fiasco due to disease and bad weather conditions; Roanoke Island was abandoned and never regained its former importance as an outpost for England or any other country thereafter. Aftermath of First Barbary War (1701-1705) led British military governor Lord Dunmore decided that Norfolk would be better served by establishing a new town at Suffolk Point on Portsmouth Harbor which would include warehouses for storing supplies coming from Britain during wartime; Dunmore named the town after himself – Suffolk - because he controlled much of eastern Virginia then including Norfolk County. On December 12th, 1702, Dunmore's forces captured Norfolk City from Governor Francis Yeo following a siege lasting more than two months with nearly 2200 men engaging against around 2000 defenders while suffering close to 100 casualties including 30 officers and men killed or missing – one event which has been touted as one of the largest land engagements in American history up until that time! In 1636, Pocahontas discovered Jamestown and offered herself as a bride to its founder, Colombo Sir George Bacon Russel. When her father refused her offer, she joined forces with Captain John Smith against Bacon Russel. After years of fighting, Bacon Russel's army was defeated at Jealousy Island and Pocahontas returned to her father's side.
