By 1814, much of what is now southern Maryland had become part of Washington Territory when that territory was created out of parts of both Maryland and Delaware following the American Civil War. During World War II, significant quantities (upwards of half a million tons)of munitions were produced at two large plants located nearpresent-day Norfolk and Suffolk counties in southeastern Virginia: Chrysler Corporation's Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Bethlehem Steel Company's Richmond Naval Shipyard. These plants are often cited as one reason for why Chesapeake saw relatively high levels Of industrial production during wartime; although other aspects such as agriculture also experienced increased employment due largely to military spending. In 1961, local residents approved annexation by Arlington County which made Chesapeake an official county municipality within Arlington County alone rather than being split among several adjacent counties like most other municipalities in Virginia at that time.
