Chesapeake, Virginia is a city in and the county seat of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It was founded by the English colonists in 1607 as Jamestown. The town of Annapolis was founded on land that was part of present-day Chesapeake Bay. In 1614, Lord Baltimore granted a charter to John Smith for "the settlement and protection" of his people. Johnsons Colony grew rapidly, and by 1631 it had a population of 2,500. This period is known as the "Golden Age" of Annapolis because so much good happened here such as creating a successful military force that later became known as the Maryland Regiment (a unit in today's Army). In 1632 Governor Christopher Wren erected what is now called Cappo's Tower at Federal Hill to serve as the first public building in what would become Annapolis. The erection served two purposes: it served as a lookout point for warships patrolling against pirates and also acted as an early warning system for potential attackers on nearby shorelines. Annapolis soon became an important commercial center due to its location near two major rivers—the Susquehanna River to the north and Patapsco River to the south—and its access to both waterway systems means that trade from distant lands crossed through Annapolis during this time period. Merchants from London bought goods brought back by sailors sailing upriver or downriver; these traders then sold their products along with those coming downriver at local markets before heading back upriver again for more cargo or passage downstream on other vessels. This business activity helped support development within Annapolis itself and gave rise to some infamous names associated with this era: The Golden age Trailheads were familiar enough landmarks but still avoidable locations where travelers could be lost without endangering themselves or their equipment; Nuns' Row was located just off Market Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue; while Prince George's Plaza across Fourth Street from City Hall may have been once thoughtlessly named after one or more members of Queen Anne's court (though this name is no longer extant), it now houses government buildings including both District Courtrooms (where trials are heard) and Superior Courts (which handle high-level criminal cases).
