Bullets were first designed for military use in the early 1800s. However, it wasn't until 1851 that bullets were developed specifically for shooting sports. The first successful rifle bullet was created in 1857 by George Stephenson and TimOTHY Brown. This bullet was known as the “Dart” and had a copper core that was shot through with an iron ball. It was used to shoot Sporting Arms Company rifles at a distance of 100 yards. In 1861, Confederate forces began using this bullet to shoot down Union cannons on battlefields throughout Virginia. By 1865, bullets had become so important to the Confederacy that they produced their own version of the “Dart” bullet - the “Concussion” bullet. This projectile had a lead core that was shot through with a bronze or brass ball. It replaced the “Dart” asthe most popular rifle bullet in America during the late 1800s and into the 1900s.

Chesapeake, Virginia is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The town and CDP are named after General James Armistead Maupin who fought in the American Revolution and became a hero to many in that region. The towns of Historic Chesapeake and New Kent were founded by Virginians in 1784 as part of a plan to create new counties out of parts of present-day Norfolk and Suffolk Counties. New Kent County was formed on July 1, 1821 from parts of Norfolk County. In 1875, both towns were acquired by Richmond County for $1 million from William Gaston Tucker. In 1938, Petersburg was transferred from York County toRichmond County as well According to the 2000 Census there were 2,965 people living in Chesapeake CDP including 1,724 households and 831 families residing within the unincorporated community known as "West Point". Of these residents: 82% identified themselves as white; 11% black or African American; 3% Native American or Alaskan Native; 0% Asian ; 5% Hispanic or Latino; and 4% other races/ethnicities

Other industries that flourished during this time include papermaking and seafood production. As recently as 2007, Chesapeake's economy was still dominated by agriculture with a small number of businesses handling most economic activities within the town itself as well as surrounding counties."
