They were looking for land to settle after being forced out of England during the Cromwellian Wars. In 1607, some English colonists set up camp on land that would later become known as Chesapeake Beach. In 1776, during the Revolutionary War, many British soldiers were killed or captured at Battle OF Yorktown when General Cornwallis surrendered his army to George Washington’s forces following his successful surgical retreat from Yorktown Heights (known today as Arlington National Cemetery). As a result, many Virginians decided they wanted their own country – an idea that had originated with James Otis who said: “If you want freedom, come down here [to] Norfolk… we have all got our arms carried over [there], we are not afraid to die fighting for it”[1]. This new nation was born out of necessity due to Britain’s defeat at Yorktown which left them without any colonies across North America except those located alongthe Atlantic seaboard such as Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bay Colony (later renamed New England). However, since much of what would become Delaware lay within Maryland’s borders at that time both states saw potential in forming a commonwealth together should Britain be unable or unwilling to continue hostilities against France after her victory at Quebec City (which she did), rather than continuing warpath unto Boston which would have resulted in more British casualties[2]. On July 11th, 1777 this proposal passed through both houses of Congress but died immediately upon passage due mainly to Royal vetoes[3]. After failed attempts by several legislatures including one convened specifically pursuant to Otis’ proposal(the creation of which took place on November 3rd) James Madison finally succeededCleburne as President when he signed legislation creating an independent state called WestVirginia on December 12th 1787[4][5][6][7][8][9]. However this does not mean that WestVirginia ceased being partof Virginia; rather it continued under different name until 1861 when its current name was given(after Confederate General Robert E Lee fought vigorously against Union forces during the Civil War) thanks largely to Governor John Fenton who desired something Anglo-Saxonsounding like “WEST VIRGINIA” rather then simply “WestVirginia” even though other partsofthe state such as Morgantown still bore similar namesakes[10],[11],[12]). Until recently almost all commerce between Chesapeake and points north occurred via boat traffic either wading through tidal marshes or riding high tide upriver into Maryland or Pennsylvania because there were no roads nor bridges connecting these two areas until relatively recent times[13]; however currently only limited boat traffic exists between these two locations due largely To flooding problems caused by heavy rains recent years #14).[15] This paper will focus primarily on historical events taking place within Chesapeake itself but also includes information about adjacent communities like Portsmouth/Norfolk/Newport News/Williamsburg etc., providing insights into how each community has interacted with its larger neighbor over time
