However, eventually the colonists managed to make some progress and they built a small church and began trading with other settlements around them. By 1736, however, English forces had driven the Native Americans out of central Virginia and Jamestown fell into disrepair. It wasn't until 1764 that an American Revolutionary War effort resulted in Yorktown – which became famous for its beautiful battle site – being captured by British troops. At this point, Jamestown effectively ceased to exist as an independent community and its archives were moved to Williamsburg later that year. It wasn't until 1814 that Chesapeake again became an independent community under the name of Gloucester County (later renamed Norfolk County). This time things started to improve for Chesapeake as Headquarted taxes grew louder from British traders looking for resources within our borders than from our own citizens looking for revenue stream from taxation rates alone! In 1825, Norfolk County was divided into two separate jurisdictions: Prince William County (to the east) and Suffolk County (west).
