After clashes erupted between the groups, one person was killed and many were injured. This event has been condemned by both sides of the political spectrum as a hate crime against all people who are not white supremacists or right wing nationalists.

In the summer of 1781, a large group of patriots gathered in Charlottesville to plan their next move. In early September, they convened ina new town called Yorktown and declared themselves an independent country. The following month, a large army under General George Washington arrived in Charlottesville and began besieging the town. On October 12th, British forces finally entered the town and began leading up battle cries for independence. This led to a series of skirmishes that lasted into November. Ultimately, Washington's army withdrew and Yorktown fell to British forces. However, this victory did not mean that independence had been achieved; there remained much work to be done before it could be formalized.
Charlottesville was founded in 1771 as a small town in the Shenandoah Valley. It grew rapidly and by 1815 it had become an important center of the slave trade. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Charlottesville became a Confederate capital city. After the war, it became an important center for integration and political liberalism. The city was destroyed by fire in 1886, but its rebirth began in earnest in the 1990s with the construction of new buildings and roads.
