On November 12, 2017, two cars drove into a crowd of peaceful protesters near the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville, VA. The car that hit the protesters was driven by James Alex Fields Jr., an anti-fascist activist who had earlier attended a white nationalist rally nearby. After the accident, Fields began to run away from the scene and was eventually apprehended by police officers. He is now facing charges of second degree murder and malicious wounding.
The city of Charlottesville, Virginia is located in the Shenandoah Valley region of central Virginia. It is bordered to the north by Harrisonburg and to the east by Roanoke Rapids. The population of Charlottesville was estimated at 100,027 as of 2010. In 1819, General Robert E. Lee made his home in Charlottesville and served as a colonel in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. In 1861, he moved his family to Richmond, Virginia, which became their new home until they were ordered to move back to Charlottesville after Confederate forces seized control of Richmond on April 12th 1865. The city was originally built on an area that includes today's downtown and parts of University Park and Hegewood neighborhoods.

Lee moved his army from Northern Virginia to join Confederate forces in Virginia; this event helped make Charlottesville one of the Confederacy's key strongholds. After the war ended in 1865, however, many businesses closed down or went out of business as Reconstruction efforts failed to bring back much development to Charlottesville. Today, Charlottesville is home to a number of interesting attractions including Alumni Hall at UVA College (which contains extensive historical exhibits), Mount Vernon Cricket Club (founded in 1792), Chamberlin House (a Georgian-style mansion built for businessman George Washington Chamberlin), and Scott Sports Complex which houses tennis courts, basketball courts, and track & field equipment.
