The town site had been chosen because it lay near two major sources of water: the James River and York River. On July 25, 1800, General Nathanael Greene arrived at Charlottesville with 5,000 troops to take part in a campaign against British forces under Lord Cornwallis. In early September 1800, General John Forbes relieved Greene and returned to Virginia with 1,500 soldiers camped at Charlottesville. On October 9th 1800 Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Pope came from Lynchburg with 2 militia companies to garrison Charlottesville until new barracks could be built there (the first permanent military installation in Albemarle County). In November 1800 Captain John Cook Umbert gave notice that he would soon leave for England on account of ill health but left instructions that his house should be used as a post office until such time as arrangements could be made for its occupancy by another civilian occupant lieutenant colonel Nicholas Moore took charge of the post office while captain Cook stayed behind to help organize local militia units into what became known as "The Old Guard" or "First Battalion". On December 3rd1800 Lieutenant Colored Infantryman Crispus Attucks was killed in action at White Oak Swamp during an engagement with Patriot forces led by Major Richard Johnson...Attucks' death resulted in one of only three fatalities among American infantrymen fighting Indian War rebels up until then...Captain Cook took command of the Post Office on December 8th1800 and continued to run it until his retirement on May 15th1802 . Captain Cook is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery near Fairfax House... [ he ] also donated land adjacent to present day Blackburn Rd (then called Catharine Way) where Stonewall Jackson's home stood before being moved away followinghis victory over Union forces at Chancellorsville Park on April 14 1865

The Charlottesville, Virginia town was founded by James Robertson in 1785. The town was named after the scientist and philosopher, Dr. Thomas Jefferson, who lived in nearby Lexington, Kentucky at the time. In 1801, the town became a part of Virginia City, Nevada when that state was created from parts of California and New Mexico.
