In 1751, when King George II granted political independence to Virginia, he renamed Albemarle County "Prince William's County" because his father had been born there. After Queen Charlotte died without issue in 1802, her brother Prince George succeeded to throne asGeorge III and changed Albemarle County back to Prince William's County again. During World War II many businesses located within downtown Charlottesville were destroyed or damaged by bombing raids from Japanese forces during World War II; however most business owners managed to rebuild or expand their businesses after the war. Today some streets within downtown are still known as areas that were heavily bombed during World War II due to their proximity to bomb sites; however, most people living near these streets no longer remember those bombings directly%. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Amendments passed in 1964,[1] many black residents moved into cities across North Carolina due to racist laws enacted during Jim Crow era segregationism.[2][3] Blacks began moving into white-owned homes throughout Northern Virginia until integration officially began on April 12th 1948 when Montgomery buses took off from Schuylkill Street Bridge[4][5] transporting black students out of Birmingham, Alabama towards Northern schools busing students into local white schools under desegregation orders issued by President Harry Truman.[6][7] On August 14th 1951 riots erupted between white supremacists and African Americans at Howard University after awhite student tried lighting a fire inside an all-black dormitory;[8][9][10] subsequent riots followed on September 11th 1951 when two African American police officers were shot dead while driving through West End neighborhood [11][12]: two days later three people were killed when rioters burned down an Italian restaurant on Fairfax Avenue NW[13]. On December 4th 1955 four policemen were killed at an Arlington Heights luxury shopping mall while investigating a burglaryThereafter several jurisdictions including Alexandria Municipal Police Department used helicopters for crime suppression operations against criminals operating outside city limits
