Additionally, businesses such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney opened their doors in downtown Charlottesville during this time which helped contribute to increased economic activity throughout townscape. However, much like other parts of America during this time period there were also struggles with racism throughout the cityscape with African Americans experiencing discrimination both inside and outsideof business entities; this led eventually to social unrest within city limits that ultimately culminated into violence between whites supremacists and African Americans known commonly as The Racial Riot Of 1898
The town of Charlottesville, Virginia was founded in 1795 by the brothers Thomas and George Washington. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Rappahannock River, which made it an important transportation hub. In 1812, the town was renamed for General Lafayette, who had died in action during the War of 1812. It was not until 1865 that Charlottesville became a city.
