Charlottesville began as a small trading post on the James River by General John Forbes on April 12th 1795 (the date still remains inscribed at present-day Park Avenue). The post quickly grew in importance due to its location near key transportation hubs – such as the Richmond-to-New York Railroad – making it an ideal place for traders and merchants to conduct business. By 1819 Charlottesville had become an important center for trade withinwealthy Virginia thanks to its growing population and expanding economy. In 1831 Citadel Academy was established here as one of America's first private schools; this helped contribute to increased tensions between rich Northern Virginians and Southern Vaqueros over education issues (the two sides eventually merged into one school system).
