In the early 1800s, Bristol, Virginia was a small town with a population of around 1,000. It was known for its textile industry and its manufacture of firearms including pistols and rifles. In 1836, the Bristols opened their first rifle store named Brown's Arsenal. The store continued to be in business until 1867 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1871, a group of gentlemen from Bristol interested in buying arms formed the Virginia Rifle and Pistol Society (VRPS) with the goal of buying new guns and ammunition to use in defense against Native Americans in Virginia. The VRPS purchased two shotguns from Brown's Arsenal and began training soldiers for use against Indian fighters. The VRPS also constructed a facility called "Bristol Armory" which became home to America’s first shotgun factory producing Winchester shotguns. The gun company produced over 100 different shotguns at this facility before closing down in 1958. Today, there is still remnants of Bristol Armory remaining as part of the University Park campus within walking distance of many students' residences on North Tryon Street in downtown Bristol proper.
