Bristol, Virginia is a town in southwestern Virginia. It was founded in 1749 by the Welsh-born Captain John Smith as part of the Colony of Roanoke. Bristol was named for the Bristol Spitfire, one of the first European aircraft to fly. The first stores and post office were built in 1753. In 1801, Bristol became one of the original six counties of Virginia. The population was 57,644 at the 2000 census. The town's history begins with Captain John Smith's arrival in 1749 on his ill-fated voyage to find a new route to India. When he arrived in Roanoke Island (present-day Johnston County), he erected a small cabin and called it "Bristol." He soon realized that this small settlement would be difficult to sustain without some form of trade or commerce. So Smith began negotiations with local leaders for permission to build a store and house here. This initial effort failed because no one wanted to invest their time and money into something that might not succeed. In order for Bristol to become viable, though, Smith turned to his contacts within English society for help: His friend and business partner James Pulteney lent him $10,000 cash; General George Washington offered him land on which he could build an inn; while Loyalist militiamen helped provide security for Smith's store during the early days of American independence (1776–77). In due course, Bristols growth continued apace as people from surrounding settlements banded together to support their newly formed community - becoming known as "The Friendly Colonies." In 1801 Bristols incorporation as a county gave it more autonomy than other areas within Virginia at that time - something which many residents continueto appreciate today! After years of growth and development, however, Bristols most notable accomplishment may well have been its role in helping contribute significantly towards efforts led by Governor Ralph Bunche during World War II – specifically providing housing for soldiers stationed nearby at Camp Butler (later Camp Morton) and Fort Story (later Fort Belvoir).
