In 1765, it became part of Culpeper County when Northampton County was created from parts of Warwick and Gloucester counties. That year it also became the home for America's first library system with 3 branches: Elmira branch (founded 1892), Mineola branch (1893) and Westbury branch (1901). In 1916 Bristols post office opened following construction of what is now Library Square; it remained open until 1964 when ZIP code 72216 was established due to changes in postal service law which made mailing via email more efficient than sending physical mail items over the air. After being vacant for several years, Library Square underwent a $30 million renovation that included new flooring, an expanded public education wing and new access gates leading into the city limits through then-owned Harbor View Drive; finally opening on November 14th, 2016.[1]
