The first permanent European settlers in the area were French colonists who founded a small trading post on the site of present-day Bristol in 1754. In 1801, the United States acquired the land from France and built Fort Sumter to guard against British aggression. The fort served as a point of entry for goods and passengers traveling up the Potomac River to Georgetown, Washington D.C., during the War of 1812. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Virginia, General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to move southward through Loudoun County along the Rappahannock River toward Petersburg. As they traveled, they encountered Union forces marching northward along the same route. Confederate units were able to cross over into Union territory undetected and continued their march northeastward towards Petersburg while their commanders feigned retreating back across the river. On April 12, 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Point Lookout on Governor's Island near Petersburg while these troops were crossing over into Union territory; this attack resulted in one killed and three wounded before Early was quickly driven back by artillery fire from Union positions on shoreline properties east of Point Lookout. On April 14th Confederate General Robert Easley attacked Union forces defending Fort Donelson on Cape Hatteras Island off North Carolina's Outer Banks; this attack resulted in two dead and four wounded before being repulsed with heavy losses by Union defenders at close range with artillery support from Battery Wagner upon landing onshore.[1] In 1865, following Reconstruction policies implemented by President Abraham Lincoln afterthe Civil War ended, Bristol became a part of Virginia Beach until it was annexed by Norfolk in 1969.[2]

The Mound House State Historic Site is a historic site located in Bristol that features an example of an early earthwork mound house dating back to about 1100 BCE. It is one of two surviving earthwork mound houses in central Virginia and it is one of only four such houses remaining across all of North America! The other three are at Cahokia Mounds National Monument (in Illinois), Pithouse Hill (near Baltimore) and Moat House (near Lexington). excavations at the site began in 1941 and continued until 1992; during this time they recovered 27 burials including nine complete skeletons! Today the site is open daily from 9am to 4pm for visitors who can tour the reconstructed remains with docents; tickets are $3 for adults/$1 for kids ages 6-12 and free for children under 6!
