The first permanent English settlers in what is now Blacksburg were called "Nova Scotians." They arrived in 1752 as indentured servants and were considered second-class citizens because they lacked voting rights and could not hold office. In 1813, when Virginia became a state, Blacksburg became its capital. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1814 and replaced with a new building that still stands today. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through Blacksburg on their way to Petersburg before crossing the Potomac River into Maryland. General Robert Ewell's Confederate forces fought near Blacksburg on September 11th while Ulysses S. Grant was visiting nearby Roundabout Hill Battlefield National Monument (now known as Mockingbird Field). During the battle about 100 Confederate soldiers died and many more were taken prisoner as Union General George Thomas advanced upon Blackstocks Bridge over Bull Run Creek to effect an end to the war early that morning without encountering any resistance from local militia or cavalrymen under Colonel John Surry Farley III of Fairfax County who had led them into battle despite orders not to do so from his superiors. Although some black men had enlisted in Confederate units since 1861 out of concern for their families back home in North Carolina or central Georgia where Reconstruction hadn't happened yet, most African Americans living within 10 miles of Yorktown/Petersboro/Blacksburg either remained loyal to the Union or joined partisan groups supporting General Robert Ewell such as White Oak Swamp Rangers under Captain James Longstreet According to historian Lester Loyd: "Ulysses S...granted amnesty [to all black soldiers] if they surrendered unconditionally beforeUnion capture" It should be noted here that these same troops actually committed serious atrocities against civilian targets such as women and children≈ including scalping them alive. This event has been dubbed "The Battle of Bull Run". Aftermath: Aftermath: On October 9th 1865 Union general Braxton Bragg reached blacksburg after marching 970 miles nonstop across America following Gettysburg; he ordered 4 cannons shot at government buildings & stores—killing 3 people& wounding 25 others.— resulting in widespread panic & flight→Blackburn residents return home ↑On November 16th 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 2106 which stated that Colored Troops must present themselves at once at military posts throughoutVirginia or leave immediately ↑In 1866 Whitesville was established adjacent to Blacksburgh along Bull Run Creek just south of modern day University Park neighborhood ↑In 1870s several plantations were abandoned & converted into schools & other businesses ↑ Town limits changed around this time ↓ By 1880s only 1%+ whites lived within town limits ↑ By 1940s almost all white residents had left → Today there are almost no black residents remaining inside town boundaries
