Over time however, this industry slowly disappeared as competitors developed more sophisticated methods for producing metals from coal or other sources. One significant advance was development of slit lens technology which allowed viewers to see details that were otherwise hidden by bulky telescopes predecessors like Cooke's Beagle and Kingdon's Patterson reflectors. Slit lenses are still often used today in high-end spotting scopes for improved magnification and detail retrieval capacity!
