When Blackburg, Virginia became a town in 1819, it was the first military post on the Appalachian Mountains. The original guns and cannons that were used to defend against Native Americans were stored here. The town grew up around these cannonballs, and today there are many businesses and restaurants located in downtown Blackburg. One of the earliest shooters in Blacksburg was John “Cocky” Bemis. He operated a blacksmith shop at 7th Street and High Street in 1839. cockybemis@aol.com In 1847, Jesse James Winchester shot an arrow into the ground next to his rifle shop at 2nd and Market Streets. This event is often considered to be the beginning of gun culture in Blacksburg. In addition to shooting arrows across streets, Jesse James Winchester also fashioned rifle stocks out of local trees as part of his hobby. This type of woodworking continued throughout the early 1800s in Blacksburg as a means of protection from Indians or other invaders who may have attempted to steal goods from settlers or merchants during this time period. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army southward towards Petersburg after learning about Confederate President Abraham Lincoln’s April 14th inauguration through spies within Union forces stationed inside Richmond County, Virginia (the capital city). After failing to take Petersburg by storm with his main army, Ewell withdrew behind Appomattox Court House where he ordered all artillery fire redirected towards Lee’s supply depot east of town while he himself fought off an attack by Union General Jubal Early near Deep Bottom Creek Bridge just outside town limits on April 16th 1865 known as “The Day Of The Confederacy” according to some sources – one incident which has been incorrectly interpreted as being an Allied victory because Confederate losses reached 575 men dead or wounded outnumbering Union casualties only 394 killed and wounding; however this report does not mention any battle taking place east of town). Withdrawing from Petersburg allowed Confederate General Robert Ewell safe passage north over Confederate-held state lines into northwestern Virginia without having lost any troops or equipment along the way like those suffered by fellow Southern generals such as Joseph Johnston when they retreated south from Richmond County following Ulysses S Grant's March 9th Overland Campaign.. On May 1st 1865 three days after General Robert Ewell's withdrawal from Petersburg occurred clashes between retreating Yankees & Confederates at Dooley Gap northeast of town resulted in 4 Federal officers dead including Captain George Meade USN&13 enlisted men & 3 horses killed & 6 captured

In 1971, Blacksburg became an all-white school district with African Americans re- admitted as freshmen; this caused some resentment among some black residents who felt their community had been taken away from them through political process rather than natural growth. Whites quickly regained control over schools and government while blacks gradually assimilated into mainstream society. Today, Blacksburg is home to several large businesses including George Mason University's School of Business and Economics and Appalachian Power Corporation which manufactures electricity from coal mines in nearby Mingo County
