It is named after George Washington and his family. The first white settler in what is now Blacksburg was John Randolph who came to the area in 1777. He owned some land on which he built a small cabin and raised pigs. In 1811, Randolph's son-in-law, James Browning purchased one hundred acres (40 ha) of land from Randolph for $500 dollars (). Browning built a small log cabin and named it "Blacksburg". He also planted trees on his land to provide shade during the summertime and sold eggs from his home for three cents each to help support himself and his family (); this tradition continues today. The first black person to live in Blacksburg was Elisha Hawkins who arrived there in 1819; Hawkins had come with Andrew Jacksons group of enslaved Africans as part of a trade ship called "Elvira". After living among Native Americans for several years, Hawkins decided that he wanted to become independent and so emigrated to America where he met John Berry who convinced him to stay with him as his servant instead of going back home again (). By 1830, Hawkins had moved out into his own house (), renamed it "John Berry House", started keeping chickens () and started making coffee (). The first school in Blacksburg opened its doors in 1828; it was operated by students from nearby Fairfax County (). The school grew gradually over time until it became an all-white high school proper when African Americans were allowed enrollment starting in 1954(). Today, Blacksburg High School offers classes ranging from 12th through 16th grade along with Adventures in Learning which provides instruction for pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade children Blacksburg has been host to many popular events over the years such as the 50 State Fair held every year since 1970 (), April Fool's Day Parade (), Homecoming weekend (August 4–8), Patriot Day parade (), Shakespeare festival (September 6–10), Virginia Tech Hokies football game on October 31st (), Fourth of July fireworks display ('PDX Fireworks'), Christmas tree lighting ('Christmas Tree Lighting') Blacksburg's rich history goes back centuries! Here we can find our humble beginnings - building a small cabin complete with chickens & coffee/tea making while living amongst friendly natives :) From there we soon took up farming & trading away from those pesky Indians (& others) ..... oh & yes we did all this while being busty bitches ;) until finally becoming an american state side by side w/virginia tech................. folks! lol
