After V-E Day (May 8, 1945), more than 100 black soldiers from nearby Roanoke Island enlisted into service with Company E 3/5th Infantry Regiment here at Blacksburg University before being sent overseas where they fought heroically against Nazi Germany and its allies. During Reconstruction it experienced significant political turmoil which led to its reestablishment as an agricultural center but also saw increased crime rates which helped contribute to its decline during the 20th century.
