The area that would become Blacksburg was originally developed as part of Loudoun County for sheepraising and farming purposes. By 1802, however, blacks had started presence in what would become Prince William County as slaves working on plantations owned by white landowners. During the early 1800s, slaveholders began to emancipate their slaves in order to increase their profits; this led to increased African American settlement within Loudoun and Prince Williams Counties respectively. In 1749, white Virginians founded a small plantation colony named Christ's Hope on the James River near present-day Blacksburg afterUA student John Adams made an unsuccessful attempt to dissuade his fellow students from traveling downriver for religious reasons during Lent (the month leading up to Easter). christ's hope was intended as an agricultural outpost serving primarily English colonists studying under British missionary Father Edward Kilburne who lived nearby at Botetourt House (now known as Old Dominion University). In 1819, it became an incorporated municipality with a total population of 21,646 when it joined Fairfax County; until then its citizens were considered farmers or planters rather than city dwellers or educated professionals like those living in Alexandria or Richmond because these areas had been established as separate municipalities since before independence from Great Britain. The early years of black community development were difficult due largely to racist attitudes among whites who believed that all Africans were inherently hostile & dangerous creatures not capable ofcivilized behavior worthy of human rights & democracy - hence why they could only be used for manual labor on plantations which became increasingly common following emancipation throughout U S .
