Blacksburg was founded in 1740 by John Blair and his wife, Susanna Whiteside. The city's first permanent settler was James Blair, who came from nearby Bothell. Blacksburg became a town in 1847 when it merged with neighboring Harrisonburg. In 1881, the town of Blackwater was annexed into Blacksburg.
